I thought it was an urban myth that a chubby IT contractor had caused them to have to have all of their horses put down.

I had the same in the post office when changing currency. I think it's intended that you witness the counting so that there are no disagreements afterwards. I like your note idea though. Maybe you could also wear a balaclava so that the robbers won't be able to identify you outside the bank.
