I stayed at this hall of residence. 34 quid. Just behind the Holiday Inn Express in Old St. Can't fault it for the price.

Actually IIRC there is a holiday inn on old street that would be handy for the city and a night out. Not sure on cost though.
The Great Eastern looks alright, probably quite expensive though.
Edit: Not even called the great eastern anymore. What is the world coming to.

Have you considered University accomodation? During summer hols ( and Easter ) many of the universities that have student accomodation rent them out . Usually they are basic but ensuite in most of the newer ones. Probably no TV but then again you did say cheap ! Here is one of them , but just google for others
