The EDL (I suggest) is a manifestation of the street thug wing of British fascism, which is resurgent now because of Griffin's failure to move the BNP from being a street organisation to a successful electoral force. When it looked as if he might be successful, then the thugs and hard-line racial nationalists (or Nazis or fascists if you prefer) could be kept in check. No longer. But there is plenty of crossover between EDL and BNP.

And it'sdifficult to stick 'left-wing' fascist on the UAF when one of the signatories of the founding statement was Sir Teddy Taylor, a right-wing Tory with a life-long commitment to fighiting British fascism.

I still don't get why the UAF protest so much - letting Griffin speak on Question Time showed just what a buffoon he actually was, and exposed the BNP's leadership & policies to a wider audience who I trust drew their own conclusions.

I think it's far better to let these people have their say and trust in the electorate than start banning things just because you do not like what people say

Unite Against Fascism (UAF) was formed in Great Britain in late 2003 in response to electoral successes by the British National Party (BNP).
It began as a coalition that included the Anti-Nazi League, the National Assembly Against Racism, the Trades Union Congress (TUC) and leading British unions such as the Transport and General Workers' Union (T&G) (now Unite) and UNISON. According to Red Pepper magazine, UAF was set up by the Socialist Workers Party and the National Assembly Against Racism.
In 2005, the anti-fascist magazine Searchlight disaffiliated from UAF after an argument over tactics to defeat the BNP.

Concern has been raised that the far left SWP is seeking to dominate the UAF and in reports of some counter-demonstrations the UAF has been referred to as left-wing However it received support from politicians of all mainstream UK political parties.
It describes itself as a national campaign with the aim of alerting British society to a perceived threat of the far right — in particular the British National Party (BNP) — gaining a foothold at local, national and European elections, arguing that "there is a real danger that the BNP could get a significant platform in elected institutions."

You don't have to agree with their views, but you have to respect their right to convey them.

Don't believe everything you read in the papers, most of the trouble at these things are started by rent- a-mob UAF shipped into the area.
