You had it easy. Myself and my eight brothers used to play with an old cardbox from the grocery store, wooden stick with a piece of string and would have to play at spitting competitions assuming we had any spittle as we were only allowed a drink of tepid rainwater once a week.
"Tepid" rainwater? You were lucky!!
We used to sup on't damp cloth!
And get woken up every morning by 'aving a load of rotting fish dumped all over us!

I played with lego for years, probably because that was what my brothers had and I never got given any gender specific toys when I was a kid (also with 5 kids they couldn't afford to buy new toys, so we made do). If you start giving kids toys specifically aimed at their gender that's why boys like lego and girls end up with barbie.
Lego! Luxury.

Maybe if they had kits that could be made into cookers, fridges, hoovers, and ironing boards? You know, the things they will become familiar with?
Oi!

For boys, yes. Hasn't that always been the difficulty that the likes of lego and meccano has had, i.e. how do we get little girls interested in our product?
