I'm a bit of a misanthropist and it doesn't lend itself to gelling easily. I probably never properly integrated with my current place as I work from home a lot.

that would be a great thing to tell grads on their first day, like the old 'sky-hook' or 'Tartan Paint' trick - tell them that for the first month they have to drink from the furry cup and that if they cant find it in the kitchen to go around the office asking if anyone has one....
My first ever job one of the guys asked me to get him an Evening Citizen newspaper which hadn't been published for years. Having no change he gave me a fiver so I bought a fivers's worth of newspapers and magazines and struggled carrying them all (this was in the 70's).
Open plan office, coffee over keyboard moments all round.
It is normal for them to make the new guy do that. Best to bring in your own mug, that you can make sure has been rinsed out properly.

reminds me of the trick played on me in my first week, guy asked me to make a coffee and while i did so removed the ball out of my mouse, when i cam back and couldn't get my cursor working he said 'oh looks like its broken, you'll have to get someone from IT' so i went humbly into the IT office and finally go hold of a techy - by the time we had got back to my desk to take a look my colleague had replaced said mouse ball so when I demo'd how my pc wasn't working i ended up looking like a right twot (well even more of a twot)
I do make friends quicker with some people in the office over others:
Example 1: Fat, sweaty bloke in the corner with large beard, and thick rimmed spectacles - About 6 months.
Example 2: Fit girl in Accounts, with the low cut tops - About a day or two.

I work to get paid but I'd rather enjoy it than not and often it's the people that make the difference, so I am happy to socialise with both permies and fellow contractors to some extent. I don't expect or try to get on with everyone but now and then you find someone you hit it off with and I've made a few good friends over the years from both sides of the divide.
dont care about not making friends - when I socialise I do it with people I choose to not a random bunch of people who happen to share the same office space - have made some good mates but prob wouldn't speak to them out of a work setting
what I can't get used to is the stares I get, even months in to a contract, people look at me like I'm some kind of alien or at least I certainly I'm getting looked down on, doesn't bother me if people do look down on me its just the constant looking that does my head in....
