Who? People accorded huge wealth and status simply by accident of birth, welfare scroungers or ghastly failed ex politicians like Blair or Kinnock?

Please make thinking about it a bit easier, my wedding celebrations started 1/2 hour ago. Good old Mr Smirnoff.

Although as Gingerjedi said, some overpaid president appointed by our wonderful leaders would hardly be any better. The queen is vastly preferable to some ghastly failed ex politician like Blair or Kinnock.

Anyway, there's a street party here, I shall be joining in and drowning my republican principles in vodka.

PS As long as it's not as crap as the jubilee street party they had back in the 80s, playing "Disco Duck" at all hours. Fortunately we live in a rather posher street than we did then.
PPS That's the only problem with railing against posh people, horrible common people are even worse.

I have seen these little street parties, over the last few decades, and I thought they were a good thing.

not too much sentiment, not too much overblown nationalism, and not too much ag.

I think this is one thing the English are good at, and the Irish and Jocks would do well to watch and learn.

    WGJS.

He rather lost the whole argument when he mentioned Cherie Blair, and completely lost it when he reckoned that Blair and Brown should be invited.

I'm heading out to the garden at 8 in the morning to complete a task list of gardening and house maintenance chores and I do not expect to finish them until at least 6.

What ever happens tomorrow I won't know much about and that is certainly a good thing.

Quite probably. The aristocracy that they do have are either inbreds or celebrities who have bought their titles. They love the Royal family and tomorrow will be bloody awful with around 6 TV channels showing it all day long, lucky I'll be going over to Köln to work (don't want to but have to) followed by a few beers with some Brits who couldn't care less.

Prince Charles used to come to Darmstadt every now and then to visit a relative who ran a shop here, Princess Margaret (not that one), and she was a lovely old lady when you got to know her, just like your gran should be.

I've lived in two monarchies and three republics, and although that perhaps can't be called a representative sample, and although the monarchy really doesn't interest me very much, I'll stick to monarchies for now.

Aren't they? What do you think is the national origin of the British royal family?

The House of Hanover came, unsurprisingly, from Hanover, and every king or queen for over 200 years, from George I to George V, married a German. They're more German than Angela Merkel.

Hard to come up with a better reason to retain the Royals as hereditary head of state.
