CPU is most certainly is idle most of the time and use very little power - screen probably uses most of power, who cares if it all works nicely in one package? The only thing I hate in principle is tulipy iTunes thing - last time I installed it on my PC it started crashing it.

First thing I will do if I were to buy one is check out whether the iPad[n] will run without a PC (i.e. iTunes), because it would be a gift for parents who don't own a PC. iTunes crashes for me now and then (& currently needs reinstalling as it gives an error when I connect my iPod), but it hasn't yet crashed my machine. I tolerate it and it sort of works.

iPad 2′s maximum brightness, black level and contrast ratio were also noted by Soneira as excellent and very good. The research also confirmed that the only disadvantage of iPad 2′s larger screen is its 2.7 watts consumption

I found some games affect battery power consumption greatly (as does internet use), and even make my iPod Touch warm to the touch.

My Casio calculator still has it's original battery, which is over 20 years old now.

Re the iPad2. Battery capacity is rated at 90 kJ according to the Wiki and another source I found. If 90,000 J is to last 10 hours (10*3600 = 36,000 seconds), that's 2.5W. 2.5W to run screen, processor & WiFi/phone. Not.

10 hours of proper use is acceptable, once they get to 15-20 it would be more or less superb.

The speed these things are evolving is incredible, but batteries aren't, so it'll be interesting to see what direction pads and tablets take after a few Moore years evolution. I think they have a big future, but power is a brick wall that PCs don't face.

I have not got it yet - turned up in Apple Shop at BullRing and they sold out - the shop was full of geeks and cool people looking very smug, so I left quietly

I had a quick look in at the Apple Store in Bristol on Saturday, which wasn't as busy as I was expecting, though it was late afternoon. Seemed like the iPad1 to me.
