The guy who moved out from my new place also had redirection in place but it did not work.
I learned years ago that when one moves it is worthwhile leaving behind a couple of sheets of pre-printed Avery labels with:
Please redirect to:
Mr R Cranium Esq
16b The Ditch
Chargin-by-the-Ower
Splot AB1 2CD
with a note to the effect of:
"If you get any post for Mr RC or Mrs RC or DickHeads Limited please put one of these stickers on it and drop it in a letterbox. No postage is required."
This catches post that the redirection misses. It tends to work and people do comply. I know because we receive post with those stickers on.
I've had multiple redirections for the past ten years as I move for every contract. Unsurprisingly, anything of any value usually gets lost along the way but they do tend to be thorough with the junk mail.
A few times I've had redirections running from A-->B and B-->C and that actually works without any quibbles.
But, I reckon we get an item of post intended for a different address near to 'A' or 'B' at least once a week. I just drop it back in a letterbox with "Redirected in error" scribbled on it.
About once a month we will get someone else's entire redirection as a batch, in a polythene bag.

What really frightens me about Royal Mail's incompetency and thieving, is that when it does get privatised, it will be even worse. It'll be like CityLink, but for everything.
When I moved I setup mail redirection so that mail addressed to me at my old address gets delivered to my new address.
This morning the postman pushed through a whole bunch of letters.
All the redirected mail is actually someone elses mail, i.e. they have redirected it to me correctly, but it's a different name and a different address in Swindon and all the other mail was for a different person at a different address in Newcastle.
May I suggest compulsory eye tests for all Royal Mail staff.
My postman can't even read the single digit five inches high just above the letter box
