Oddly enough, I believe it's the only sector of the beer market that's growing. The micro brewery tax break by Gordon Brown worked wonders. I might not be able to buy a house but at least I can drink myself to death with a varied selection of real ales. Yay.
I've heard the same said about champagne, that it should be drunk from crystal mugs. I'm not sure that's true either. However didn't weak ale used to be the substitute for water in the past, when clean water was not easy to come by?

For me it definitely musn't be too cold as I find it kills the taste. I also don't like beer with too much alcohol - I prefer "session" beers of 4-4.5%.
Beer should be gulped, not drank like tea or something or sipped.
Its the aftertaste that you savour.
