I'm not saying I necessarily agreed with all the campaigners students used to affiliate themselves to but at least they had some fire in their bellies.

Todays students were fully assimilated corporate whores even before they entered puberty.

I blame Simon Cowell... and Disney.

Bejaysus. In my day we were protesting about such things as saving whales and er, and er , oh, something to do with Chile.

I quite liked the Friends of the Earth in those days, mainly because the chap running the college branch always had the kettle on.

At Kent University there was always this guy who'd stand in front of the library with an armful of newspapers shouting "Socalist Worker" in a northern leftist "power to the people" way. But Kent University was full of middle class kids from the Surrey and the home counties who'd mostly look scared and a bit confused.

In the first few days we were given a talk by the SU leader who told us not to pay our poll tax and ended with shouting "an end to this Thatcher scum!" again to much bewilderment to all us 18 years olds more worried about being away from home and having to do our own laundry etc. than radical politics.

The only people prepared to protest these days are posh folk who want the right to hunt fluffy animals.
Which is why we don't have to worry about any threat from the trade unions as they will have no popular support.

Standard teenage rebellion stuff but you didn't ever want to get talking to one of them. I could never be arsed myself since it didn't look like it would enhance my chances of scoring.
I was wondering however if this sort of energy and fire does push them to achieve in other ways, like him or not, he is doing pretty well these days.

I used to find the idea of a young man waving a radical newsaper in my direction strangely alluring

I quite enjoyed his programme last night, though I wish they'd allowed Tebbit to speak a bit more.

Maybe it's because I also went to The University of Kent.
