I suspect that, had they done so, they in fact WOULD be bothered. But as that misfortune never befell them, it is hardly worth considering.
How did YOUR parents cope with it is a more pertinent question?

    It's happening now.

The moral of the story is if you don't pay any tax don't let your wife do a big spread in the sunday suppliments talking about how much the redecoration of your 14 bedroom country mansion cost.

    I'll miss his boat myself.

I don't really expect inteliigent statements from you as you're a bit thick, but even you must know there is not a single housing market in the UK.
There is a limited supply of family housing in the best areas of London (which explains why a quite modest 4-bed can sell for a million) and prices where I am are showing large increases over last year.

In any case as I am mortgage free I really couldn't give a monkey's about house prices.

You of all people should know it was valued at just above £900K in 2008. Guess where the renovations will take it ....

I expect they already knew exactly what they wanted but couldn't get that particular style and finish at a price they wanted to pay within the UK because they aren't mass produced here. I refuse to believe that lack of expertise was the problem.

Why are you getting Polish in if there is no expense spared.

I know these high end UK guys that specialise in one off high quality modernisations are expensive but isn't the quality/finish of the work part of it. The recommendations that they can make from experience is invaluable.

I mention it as a friend of a friend spent 70K doing their house up with specialist and it is nothing less than spectacular but they advised on things like TV's you can watch from the bath, the builder recommended some mirror looking flatscreens rather than the ones specified and they are the dogs danglies over what was suggested etc.
