Do we believe the majority of society will choose to exist this way?

I also never went to higher education, started work at 17, yet I have never had any complaints. There again, I had a proper, early, education in the colonies My son seems to excel at English yet is German and educated to German levels, he can probably write better than most English educated teenagers of his age and articulate himself better (although he refuses to speak English with me!)

Maybe its just the education system. I remember when in my final year at school we were taught how to write covering letters, which I haven't done now for over 20 years, how to prepare and dress for an interview and how to act during an interview. They probably don't do that anymore but just point people at the nearest dole office...

Though these days, what people call necessities, can easily be classified as luxuries.
I'm not sure where you are coming from? I don't think people who have never worked whinge about welfare do they? I was championing the the vast majority who do work for a modest income yet struggle on despite what must seem like the whole world conspiring against their efforts.

So the questions then will be who gets how much dole, and where will it come from, and who gets to live in the nice areas. How do you judge someone's worth when there's absolutely nothing they can do half as well as a machine, and probably a dirt cheap machine at that, apart from maybe the energy to run it? And the same will be true of almost everyone, stupid or smart, talented or useless, bone lazy or manically energetic.

This isn't pie in the sky speculation either. It will soon be all too real, as a moment's thought will convince anyone with an ounce of common sense.

A related problem will be how to deal with hordes of smart, energetic, and probably guilt-ridden, people with nothing worthwhile to do - "The Devil makes work for idle hands". God knows, there are enough do-gooding busibodies around as it is; but I suspect that is nothing to the absurd heights of meddling and supervision we'll see when that time comes. Everyone will be herded and chivvied around like a lot of schoolkids the way things are going.

Until we have a system whereby it is impossible to be even remotely near to being better off staying at home, these problems will persist.

Dear me, what a load of drivel on here from those contemptuous of ordinary British people. Even if some do lack the qualifications and drive to take these jobs we should be doing them and ourselves a favour and forcing them to do so rather than squander our whole identity as a nation on excessive immigration. Whatever you choose to call it (and I only ask you to be consistent) an identity of their own is important to all human beings.

It usually provides no long term solutions anyway. Compare the ethnic proportions of nurses and patients in the 60s and see what it is now, check the hospital studies, an alleviation of a problem has become an exacerbation. Look at how we took in so many to rescue our textile and pottery industries. Where are those industries now? Did we have a shortage of taxi drivers at the time? I don't recall it.

Re background checks/criminal record checks. M The T is quite correct, it is not a level playing field as the equivalent of CRB checks do not exist in many other countries and no such checks are possible for the time before migrants eneterd the UK. References are also hard to verify and often not taken up. The checking is so skimpy that many instances of staff in care homes have been found to be illegals. Like this case:

'Illegal immigrants' held in nursing home raid - Crime, UK - The Independent

Combine both. Was apprentice sparky before going to uni. Clients love hands on experience, most of my competitors don't have.

I read an article in the Flemish press about 14000 unskilled jobs that no one wants. Its a European problem
