Salary is not the prime driver for a "permanent" role.

If you want the job and the employer wants you then you'll find the relevant accomodations can/will be made.

Saw a role advertised a while back, which was difficult to gauge in terms of level (junior, mid, senior) from the description itself - and no salary was listed was listed either.

This isn't too unusual, but when I called up the agent, they said that the client were being very non specific about the level required. They simply wanted CV's and a salary expectation. No indication of what kind of person they were looking for - just a list of technologies used.

I just told the agent 100K - surprise, surprise, I didn't hear anything, but they sounded like a right bunch of muppets anyway, so no loss there.

When I was a permie the salary element of job adverts was what attracted my attention.

Quite a common practice in the continent (with the exception perhaps of Germany to some extent). It keeps negotiations at the lower side for the less knowledgeable party(almost in all cases the worker). I guess companies/agents in UK have realised that they currently can get away with that as the market is very slow.

You've got a point though. When I used to look for permie jobs I couldn't understand why the agent didn't publish the salary.

If they are commissioned as % of the placed salary, it is in their interest to keep it high.
Maybe they dont all work like this though

    WHS

Agents are middlemen and as such rely on controlling information to derive maximum returns.

I'm only interested in day rates.

Cos if they did you wouldn't have to phone them up and ask.
