England's outstanding badness in World Cup 2010 must be a symptom of something bigger: the fact that we've got the most expensive, highest leveraged club system - and that none of our players play outside it - must have contributed to the weakening of commitment to the national colours, the evisceration of upcoming talent, the creation of an unmanageable team of frightened individuals, each of whom will now be dictating a valedictory ghost-written column to their chosen tabloid newspaper before getting on with life as a millionaire.

Like failed bankers they will pay no penalty for failure other than public opprobium and, as everybody in high finance knows, you can live with that as long as you own a Lamborghini.

Basically, we've just seen the Lehman Brothers of football and it was not pretty.
    Spot on.

The problems afflicting the England footy team are many and varied.

    1) The ridiculously disproportionate weight of expectation placed upon them in the build-up to any finals. 1966 has been a real albatross around the necks of successive managers and players.

    2) Their predictability of style, which has been persisted with through various regimes despite managerial changes in order to accommodate the media-driven "Golden Generation" theory. Makes it easy for opponents to plan nullification strategies.

    3) The lack of new homegrown talent coming through, brought about largely by the obscene amounts of money that has been lavished on Premiership clubs who, instead of nurturing youth simply pay over the odds for "finished article" foreigners.

Capello is a good manager, as was Sven before him, however neither will ever be any more successful than someone like Redknapp for the reasons given above. If they look to put all the blame at the managers' door then the issues will persist.
Most of these players are top drawer and perform week-in week-out at the top level. What stops them at International level is fear of failure, fan rejection and villification. Remove that fear and you are halfway there.
Now that Platini is hinting that clubs that do not live within their means will be excluded from European competition, these same clubs will have to start looking inward for player development in order to meet the financial criteria. It will take time but it must happen. And it will result in a greater number of players to choose from, so can only benefit the English team.

    Just my 2p worth.

And finally..............Beckham???...........Is he 'aving a laugh??

Ah but then he had a crop of young players to pick. The reason for this is that after 1998-2000 when Germany's team was crap, the German FA forced clubs to start youth academies as a condition of retaining their licences.
Another telling statistic that I read in the paper today is that there are about 30,000 qualified coaches in Germany, only about 3000 here.

Exactly what Roger Uttley, Geoff Cooke and Will Carling did when they took over England rugby in the late 80s; throw out the farts in blazers, and if you can’t throw them out, take the piss out of them until they leave of their own volition. It worked.

Apart from talent, to do well at World cup you need that passion and fire in the heart. As far as I can see these premiership footballers only see the pound notes in front of their eyes. How to do well at the World cup and earn my next mega contract ?

Only Beckham used to display the real passion for his country.

Becks was a good, not great, player at best. And I would venture that he's not the sharpest kinfe in the drawer, tactically or strategically
    Jeesus, he is okay?
