    Joe Public can barely be trusted to pick a party to vote for based on anything more substantial than the party leaders' ability to be photogenic. The whole reason we have an elected government is so people don't have to pretend to be able to make an informed choice on such matters.

    Or to move away from reasonable arguments to something people like AtW and DP might understand: do you really want people who voted Labour in for 3 successive terms to be directly involved in how the country is run?

    I think UK should move towards Switzerland model - direct democracy with regular votes on all sort of things.
