I hear your pain. Went shopping with the Missus on Saturday and found ourselves in House of Fraser. She suggests that I need a new pair of sunglasses, which I readily agreed to, as I broke my last pair. Then she points out the 30% discount on a second pair. Ten minutes later, I leave the pair having spent £120 on my sunglasses and £200 on her's....

    What do you need ?

15.4" monitor, dual core processor, 2gb RAM, 320Gb+ hard disc, DVD and Windows XP. Then put Office and whatever development tools on you may need.

I may plug in an external monitor, usb keyboard and mouse if I'm on a site for a few months. I plug is my 3G dongle to get tinter-web and remote access to client network.

what more do you need ?

In the past I've been happy with Toshiba and Acer. Last year on recommendation from here I bought a Samsung. I've had it since last June and I'm very happy with it, it's the R522 15.4" widscreen, 4Gb RAM, Dual Core etc..... Only niggle is that the right hand side of the touch pad scrolls the screen (accidentally for me) and I can't find a way to disable it. It's really annoying too, but the machine is very good.

HP I would avoid, anything I have ever used from them has been unreliable.
Dell OK, but case and keyboard a bit flimsy

I'd go for a Toshiba satelite, you can get a l500 for about 350 if you use a cashback site

Speed is ok, it doesn't look too flashy and it works well. When it comes time to replace this one, I plan to go and get another relatively basic compaq again.
