Winkers. Weds I was forced to stay at home as nanny person is too scared to drive in a smattering of snow. Permies are mildly miffed at this, despite no one else being able to get to the office anyway (I'm the most local).

I am asked to dial in to a meeting for an hour, which I do (on my personal mobile, while feeding mush to a baby). No real problems for me, but I could have said no.

Today, there is still a distinct lack of permies. One of whom I need to speak to regularly, and who is working from home.

He has no work mobile, so I call on the mobile number he gave me a while ago, only to get a snitty email telling me not to use his personal mobile.

Agreed ... except for the "from home" and " a bit" part. At least when they are at home they consume less electricity, coffee and paper from the company.

I have always used my own Laptops as my primary tools. Some companies are touchy and insist that I only use their equipment however; I usually either persuade them to make an exception and failing that I just do it. Logmein (even the free version) seems to work through most firewalls and is usually the first thing I install and test on a customers site PC; do this has got me out of the poo a few times when I have been off site and even in another country.

On the other subject I like phoning permies who are working from home and catching them out!

When permies work from home they generally forget about the 'work' bit..

Just send your boss emails at regular intervals, just to let him know that you will be invoicing him for the time.

started a topic Permies are a bit rubbish

    Permies are a bit rubbish

Back to work on Monday this week. Client Co is 3 counties away so I try to work from home as much as possible. Monday I drove in, to greet my permie brethren, show my face and throw myself back into things.

No one showed. All working from home.

So Tuesday I elected to work from home, owing to the pending snow. Wise move. I arranged web ex meetings. No one showed. I chased. Not answering telehones. I got an email explaining the snow meant they were working from home and the cell network was jammed, owing to people calling in to work.

Fine. I emailed back and said call me when you can. Nothing. Emailed in the afternoon, nothing. Rang mobile. Riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiing - voicemail. Nothing.

I have no work I can get on with, the IT support desk will not authorise installing software on their laptop to enable me to get on.

So I am schtook at home with nothing to do.

I am able, willing and ready to get on with stuff, and frankly a little bored.
All I can do is invoice them.

    Aaaaah life is good. Muppets.

Working...
