Among them was Norman Barrett, 73, who joined the circus at the age of 12 and is now one of Britain’s longest serving ringmasters and a world authority in the training of Australian parrots. Mr Barrett, who is appointed MBE, was unavailable for comment as he was in Stuttgart, performing in a cabaret alongside 20 budgerigars.
