I've been away from the UK a long time then.

I thought the Great British Christmas Tradition was the Queen's speech and then the Great Escape / Sound of Music / etc?

Believe it or not its actually gone downhill since then! Hard to believe isn't it. Christmas day we ended up watching Dave!

it's a fancy dress reality tv program whereby really well known celebs come dressed as whatever and do a hornpipe

Luckily nobody wanted to watch that - or if they did, they were too embarrassed to admit it to the rest of the family

I had to leave the room , it would take a hell of a lot of booze for me to sit in the same room as that tripe

Sounds more like stupidity, a lack of planning and prioritisation, an imbalance between work and life priorities and slightly sad to me. Could be just the fact that I have had 2 bottles of wine and quite a few of these so YMMV
