Local pub near me has shut - talking to the landlord, it's partly due to the smoking ban that stopped the old guys coming here during the week days keeping the trickle income in, and the recent tax rises (and pub operating costs) making the price of a pint of beer quite expensive compared with supermarket prices.

I tend to find that most are shut at that time in the morning.Originally posted by xoggoth View PostIt has been happening for quite a while. The only pubs that survive generally make most of their living from meals rather than just drink.
Sometimes I think it's a lot to do with the landlords/ladies. More than once I have listened to one moaning about business and though "not surprised, you miserable bastard" At our local I went up more than once about 9.30 to find it shut, it did not seem to occur to him if that that happens to the few customers he had more than once, they will soon stop bothering to go at all. It is doing a bit better with a new manager.

Non-domestic rates for the pup near my house are £24,000 per year.
Businesses would be better off under the mafia rather than the city council.

Compared to supermarket prices it's easy to see why people are drinking in pubs less.
Fook me, its cheaper in (normal) london.
Those are tourist trap, West End prices.

Nope even up north where a 2 bed house does not cost 800k they are closing at a rate of knots. It's to do with the profit margins and the fact that there are none!
Pubs have been closing fast before this recession kicked in. It used to be that a good food trade made the pub profitable. People would eat and buy drinks during their meals. The big chains latched onto this and sourced their own suppliers. So they could serve up some microwaved crap and make a huge profit on the dish. Unfortunately the quality of these meals means that people who used to eat out a lot (like me and my family) don't bother and the profitable part of the business vanishes. There is a pub in our village that this happened to. It was near where all the doggy people used to take their pets for walks and used to do a really good Sunday trade. It's dead now. Everything is microwaved now and it's on its @rse.

From what I see over the road, most of the tenants of council estates round here are not allowed to drink because it's against their religion. The rest are nutty old women.Originally posted by gingerjedi View PostAre council estate pubs busy?
There are load of bars, but the are for the youngsters and charge twice the price. That's why I think that putting up the price will never cure troublesome binge drinking.

It's probably more to do with the cost of living leaving little to spend, If you must buy a 2 bed terraced cottage for 800k then don't expect to be able to afford the pub.
