Network Engineers

What sort of Network Engineer? One of my clients asked me for someone to do some optimising on their GSM towers, or something like that.

Wouldn't a network engineer be more concerned with the physical side of things rather than the admin side?

Nope.

It's a title that's been used to describe higher level network technology people for years (Last 10 at least). Network admin/support would be your basic (ish) level guys then engineer would be more 3rd level/implementation guys.

In the last couple of years I've noticed WINTEL guys have taken to describing themselves as network engineers - not quite clear why cause they don't do networks. Realyl wouldn't bother me, but it's seriously muddying the waters up in both job searches and for getting calls from clueless agents (Not many of them, we all know).

What are they ashamed of they're trying to big themselves up by calling themselves network engineers? It's as annoying as yanks calling gridiron football.

My typing dyslexia strikes again. Not sure if that's an officially recognised problem, but sure is fck is for me. Something about typing that brings out some truly horrendous grammar/typing mistakes in me, that never happens with a pen.

Went for an interview once for a Cisco Network Engineer's post and 7 or 8 questions in, after fielding questions on SQL, Exchange and general server dogs body work asked which part of the job involved Cisco - answer was that there was a couple of cisco switches no one knew anything about and the job was mainly server admin but with the element of having to log into the switches in case anything went wrong

Can server admin type guys stop fckin calling themselves network engineers. It's making my job searching harder by bringing up lists of wintel jobs I'm not interested in. You're don't do networks, you're do server sysadmin - deal with it.
