Another point here. Unless you have a spare system to use until you find a replacement for the nicked/dropped/lost kit, you could end up losing billable time.

Self insure and be careful. That's the cheapest way. Can't see how the IT stuff worth a day or twos day rate is worth insuring. Money down the drain to me.
The stuff on a lap top is valuable, but that is easy to back up and restore.

Yes, I'd pay £1700 a year premium to insure an asset that depreciates like a dropped stone that cost me £1700.
No wonder I've got all the cash and you guys are slaving under a huge mortgage.

Mr Contractor: "Hello dear, I'm home."
Mrs Contractor: "Hiya. Where's your laptop case."
Mr Contractor: "Errm, I got back from a meeting and the laptop was gone."
Mrs Contractor: "Phew! Good job you took out that insurance."
Mr Contractor: "Actually, dear, I have something to tell you. You know that CUK you don't like me reading? Well someone on there called Dim Prawn said..."
It's a bargain at anything less than, oo, £1700.Originally posted by DimPrawn View PostWhat is the premium for this one item?

Is it really worth insuring?
Where do you draw the line? Do you get breakdown insurance on every appliance?
I know people who insure everything against everything and spend a fortune year in year out. Pet insurance, dental insurance, bike insurance, legal insurance, insurance on every electrical item in their house against breakdown.

I used to use specialist home / office insurers because of having £20k of MyLtdCo stuff at home. Most recently Hiscox. However they dumped me this year for living too near water and were rude about doing so.
So I shopped around and, to my surprise, found most home insurers now will happily cover IT stuff owned by your employer at home. They consider it normal now. So I have conventional home insurance, and cheaper than Hiscox was.
However, I have just realised, the MyLtdCo laptop, when on ClientCo premises, probably isn't insured. I'd better call them...

IIRC I had an option to insure kit when I took out my PI, PL and EL insurance but I get you can get buinsess insurance from most insurers.

I think this is an add-on to my PI & other business insurance. Randall Dorling do mine.

Insurance for Computer Kit ?
Hi,
I'm about to start using my own kit where I currently contract so I'm purchasing a laptop (probably MacBook Pro) plus other minor items. I plan to secure the laptop to the desk via a kensington lock just in case some tea leaf takes a liking to it (no perfect but stops a quick pick up and run merchant). Anyway does anyone have any advice for where and who to use for insurance of the kit. It will be company kit but I want it to be covered from being stolen and also me dropping it and stuff like that.
Thanks in advance
