    Thanks for proving my point.
Except that most of his work is in the midlands. I was saying its a possible commute. Not an ideal one.

He would however get a much nicer house for a lot less money than being in London commuter belt. There is also talk of making the line high seed so its 35 mins to the capital.

Actually it is between 1h 9mins and 1h 26mins according to the timetable.

And with peak train fares you'd need to work 1 or 2 hours just to pay the ticket.

You may have council problems with leaving it empty, since is becoming more and more contentious to own multiple homes and yet only live in one at a time.

Some councils are actively pursuing properties that have been left vacant for a certain amount of time.

    Google it (ICBA)

Some really nice places in Derbyshire - plus you'd be close to any potential contracts in Manchester or Yorkshire, as well as the Midlands. Assuming there will be any contracts left...

Why don't you just rent a furnished flat. This would be much cheaper. You can do it 3 or 6 months at a time. Remember interest on a mortgage is also dead money. That's what I do. House prices will probably drop from now on but if not they aint going anywhere for a long while. If you rent you can be even closer to work by moving from time to time. The rents in the country are really cheap. IF I remember correctly I saw houses being let for £500 in Milton Keynes for example.

The whole of the midlands is not the Black Country, waits for CyberT and his obvious reply

Sounds good in theory but you'd have to plan that one well
