Same here, had business cards, headed note-paper and all the rest done at one point many years ago when I had visions of expanding into a proper software company, hardly any of which were used in the end.

The business cards did come it handy quite often though when I was out and about 'in my younger days' and asked for some girls phone-number, i.e. impress her by giving her your business card, then have her write her number on the back of another one.

I had mine designed by a guy who did catalogues for Vidal Sassoon etc... very professional; had the original artwork supplied in Illustrator (vector based) and various other formats. I have business cards, courtesy cards, etc that are semi-opaque plastic with my company logo and contact details - looks gorgeous.

Oh well, it was fun at the time.

Those who were asking about design services (EO & WS), my mate charges £40/hr for logo work. I recall I had about 8.5 hours work off him, which was a series of logos from which to chose, two versions fleshed out in full detail, layout of a business card, plus a couple of calls to the printshop to make sure everything met their requirements. Of course, the clearer you know what you want, the quicker the process.

Anyways, if you want to get in touch with him, PM me your email address and I'll pass it on to him.

Quite right Xog...if your logo is a photograph.

If you're talking about the typical company logo that 99.9999% of businesses have then size doesn't matter as it should be vector based.

As for how/where and what size it should be on business cards/letterheads/website etc then thats something else and ideally you should have a few proofs to choose from.

If you want it printed then again ideally what you give to the print-shop should be provided in a decent format, e.g. InDesign, QuarkXpress, PhotoShop etc.

In summary, what you should ask for:
    - vector based logo
    - pantone colours or an ICC profile
    - proofs for the various print options
    - everything in one of the formats indicated above

Joe in "I should charge for this" mode.

Maybe I am misunderstanding but the best size for any image is a large as possible. Then resizing downwards gives the least reduction in quality.

Thanks, Slave, I liked his work too. The webtulipe (other than the logo) I did myself, but he does web layout work too.

I'll ask him EO. He charges by the hour so I'll ask him his estimate for one logo, CV sized, to include selection from a few options.

I seem to recall he charged me ca £350 for 2 x logos from a selection plus layout work for business cards plus print shop liaison but that was a couple of years ago.

Thanks, LB. Answered my question perfectly. I would be interested in contacting your friend at some point in the near future.

Not so worried about the interaction with the printers as my father was in the business for many years.

Paid a professional to do it. He also took care of the liaising with the print shop as otherwise those guys will try and baffle you with science.

He produced a series of logo suggestions for me, I chose one after a bit of feedback, he laid it out in different formats and sizes, took care of card layout and printing, stationery and all the rest.

He is a mate which helps, but I insisted on paying him the going rate as he was starting up as an independent himself at the time. If anyone wants to contract his services, let me know.
