OK, from the Park Royal, you'd be one junction away on the M56 to hop on the M6 then straight off again for Birchwood/Risley. Knutsford, as mentioned, is three junctions down on the M6 but if I was looking to stay a bit further away, then I'd choose Chester over Knutsford. Chester is about 3 or 4 junctions along the M56. Lots of places to stay in Chester at all budgets and plenty to do in the evening.

You could stay in Knutsford and travel in along the A50. Knutford has some nice pubs, restaurants and a wine bar.

Goolge The Village hotel in Warrington - very nice, can get reasonable rates and the food ain't bad - as you're only there for 4 nights, i wouldn't bother venturing out of the hotel! There's also a golf driving range nearby to keep you occupied if you're that way inclined...
Warrington isn't that bad, no worse than any similar sized town in the south. Stockton Heath is nice and the pubs are good.

Thanks for all the advice! Pickmere looks lovely, but Stockton Heath is more convenient, so I may go for that...

I would avoid coming into Manchester unless you enjoy crawling along packed motorways.
M62 & M60 are not much fun during rush hour also city centre hotels are expensive.

I'd stay at Pickmere house, in Pickmere. Situated between two boozers in a sleepy village. A49 at your doorstep takes you straight into Warrington.

Is Warrington the place with the Mock Tudor multi storey car park? I saw that from the motorway and vowed never to visit that town.

Yes, the centre is fairly grim, go on a weekday afternoon to get the full mouth gaping effect (that will be you and them, but yours will be disbelief rather than slack-jaw)
There is worse, ventured to Halton Lea shopping centre recently (needed a bank branch there), it looked like Dr Moreau's testing lab.
Anyway - If you can get anywhere near Stockton Heath, you should find it like a different country entirely. It's a mile or so due south of the centre and just over the ship canal, plenty of money around = nice bars and restaurants. Not sure of accom though.

Just make sure you're never too far from a motorway out of town.
