I grew up in Singapore and my folks still live out there. It is not uncommon to get a smoky haze, sometimes a pretty bad one, when the winds blew from that region. There’s no way to put them out without getting into the mines which are ablaze and well rather warm, and they are still burning.
When younger on my Grand Tour I visited Indonesia and remember seeing several places where they were 'improving' the land. One place they removed entire hills, asking the farmers permission first of course.
This democratic process produced wonderfully amusing sights where a farmer or two had said no to them removing the hill. Their fields were left where they were, perched up the top of towers of earth, some up 4 storeys in the sky.
Sorry to be a pain here, but Borneo is just an island that has three countries on it. Brunei is there as is Malaysia and Indonesia. Suharto was the President of Indonesia till 98 and not Dictator of Borneo.
Also the last fire (The 02-03 one) emitted 1 billion tonnes of CO2, which is a lot, but not a third of world emissions and nowhere near the USA's annual 6.1 billion tonnes.
So the point of the sotry was....?
'just' an island. what do you mean by 'just' does that make it insignificant ?
Britain is 'just' an island
Borneo is three time the size
Nobody get voted 'Dictator' (not since Julius Caesar) Adolf Hitler was Chancellor, but no one disputes he was a dictator. Suhato was also a dictator, albeit voted in as president.
It is true that I cant answer Brillos question, are the peat fires still burning ?
they were last year. I will have a little poke around tomorrow to see if I can find out
A couple of decades ago, the dicator of Borneo, Suhato, decided to clear the rain forest then drain the peat bogs in order to plant rice.

Burning brazillian rainforest accounts for about 10% of the world's CO2, but this has the double whammy effect of reducing the capability of the forest to process the carbon (as there is less of it).
Basically, we need the rainforest, not more cows. But tell that to Rodrigez who has to feed his family and doesn't give a flying fexk about the planet.
