Your facts are wrong. It was Edward Heath that was a staunch Europhile and he never changed his stance until he died a few years ago. Thatcher was against EU control and in favour of the 'free' market and did not become PM until after the previous crisis (IMF + Winter of discontent) under Labour in 1979. It was also Thatcher that won us the EU rebate with her tough stance that Labour has frittered away in trying to appear pro-EU.
