Urp is really dear at the moment maan. Shamed to say I did almost NO apres ski this year and bought my booze at the local SPAR and sat in my hotel room coz at 8 euro for 400ml of beer it wasn't happening. Good luck to the bar owners like. You don't have to buy their ale. Oh yeah. The ski-ing was ace. I went Italy this year to 1850mts. Austria although lovely is a bit too low in most places so doesn't get the snow.

North America later this week - back after Easter.
Can't (fookin) wait.

go boarding instead... you'd get far more respectable posts
regardless... Austria is better than France late season imo so have a good 'un
And all the locals are nutts so the apres ski is wild

I spent 2 months in St ANton last year from Feb to early April. Judging by the snow reports this year it seems that every year the snow gets better and better later in the season. last year Feb was nice and sunny but with not much snow (I say not much, the official reading was 2.7 metres at the top) By the time we left in the 2nd week in April, it was 4.5 metres - phenomenal snow!!! The last week we had a powder day every day. Sonnenkopf is top even days after a snowfall to get good powder stashes. Best thing we did was hire an offpiste guide for a few days - phenomenal boarding in 3metre powder!
St ANton is a bit of a macho/testosterone fuelled sausage fest though, but I havent found better snow or terrain anywhere in the world

Excellent, really enjoyed it, tempered by a lot of aching muscles. Last time I skiied I was a 4-times a week gym person. Now I'm a 4 mars bars a day person.Originally posted by swamp View PostTensai,
How did you get on in St Anton?
There was so much fresh powder, I ditched the skis and hired a snowboard. Awesome time out there, especially off-piste in the Sonnenkopf area on Friday in the sunshine

Staggeringly expensive though with the current Euro rates. First day, got to the bottom of the Nassereinbahn lift for a beer, goulash and bread lunch, I parted company with a €20 note.
Also watched the Micks beat the Taffs for the Grand Slam on Sat in the Funky Chicken bar.

2.5 weeks Portes du Soleil over Xmas/NY - really good base down, couple of powder days, mostly blue bird.
1 week Saalbach - snowed few days.
For both can't believe that it doesn't get tracked out and you can find plenty of pow for days after there has been a dump.
Wasn't as expensive as I thought it might be. Recommend Mutzig beer!

mmmmmmmm......... skiing.......... mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm...Originally posted by swamp View PostWho's going? Who's gone? What's the snow like this year? How much does a beer cost at 2000m?
I'm going to Austria in a couple of weeks. Can't wait!
Head butted a mountain (fell off the piste in fog) last week, and nearly broke my nose, and split both lips. Nothings that a few schnapps couldn't cure.
Feldberg tomorrow.
Not worried about the beer cost. I'm paid in CHF.Last edited by NotAllThere; 6 March 2009, 19:15.

I went to St. Anton at the end of Jan. Brilliant resort on and off piste, but drink in the evening is going to cost you an arm and a leg.Originally posted by swamp View PostI'm also going to St Anton!
Heard it's quite a lively place, good off piste too.
I've also heard it's expensive, but I'm in a fully catered chalet with free wine so it's only lunch and the odd beer (or two) in the afternoon and late evening to pay for.

I'll be in a deck chair on a sun terrace drinking beerOriginally posted by Tensai View PostI've just seen your other thread and realised we'll be there at the same time. Look out for me, I'll be the one hurtling down the mogul black run, noticeable because my skiis will be a few metres behind me.

I have been skiing in Austria.
It was really good. The weather was brilliant - cold but dry. The snow was great.
It was about 23 years ago, though. It might have changed.

No but there were a few twin prop planes, they would hurtle down what looked like 150m of runway and seemingly disappear over the edge for a few seconds before climbing again, fascinating to watch.Originally posted by Svalbaard View PostHave you ever seen a jet land at Courchevel Altiport? Still, you can do it yourself now: http://www.simtours.net/courchevel.php
There's a few vid's on YouTube if IIRC.
