    His actual apology wasn't far off that:

    In the heat of the moment I made a remark about the Prime Minister's personal appearance for which, upon reflection, I apologise.
    He's only apologised for the one-eyed bit.

    I heard this morning that he clarified his apology in similar fashion to what you suggest!

    Maybe, but the allegation isn't that she called someone a golliwog, it's that she said someone looked like a golliwog. I've seen people that look like all kinds of things. And she said it in private, not on air.

    Obviously the thing that Carol Thatcher did wrong was to make a quiet comment in private.
    If she had issued her comments loudly in public to an audience and directly at a black person to be 'edgy' and to cause outrage, followed by a partial apology, she would still have a job with the BBC.
