I did a stint in Swindon many moons ago. The only thing that saved the day was having bags of overtime, but that was a problem in its own right, since there weren't any decent fish and chip shops or cheap curry houses to grab a snack if you were working late.
I'd never come across a place before where off-licences didn't even sell canned food.
The Magic Roundabout is amazing and there seriously should be more of them around the country - it really does keep the traffic flowing (and if there is a queue in the direction you want to go you can simply go the 'other way around'..... pure genius!!
Agree with bogeyman though, Swindon town centre is shocking and suffers from underinvestment (in the shadow of Reading, Bath and Bristol). From the people I still know living there they keep going on about ripping up a load of roads and installing a canal instead
In defense of Swindon, there are some quite nice bits on the outskirts.
Haydon Wick on the North West side of the town is almost rural. Decent pub there too. The town centre is a disgrace though, lacking any of the amenities you would expect in a town that size, and Swindon Council are a bunch of incompetent dipshytes.
Swindon is a funny place, when you enter the outskirts it feels like any other 'out of town' shopping area then you keep going and come out the other side.
Ah but at least you have to go across the "magic roundabout"
