    If a Fireman were in the middle of attempting to rescue someone it is unlikely that I would engage in such an "off topic" conversation but in general everyday interactions it is far from uncommon for civilized humans to speak to each other - some might call it politeness. Maybe you should try it - possibly the Gas Engineer might respond by not ripping you off!!

    I've been asked so many times I've written it on the last page of the CV. Still get asked at interviews. Had an agent call me yesterday, and amongst all the other stuff they asked, they asked about children too.
