So - who else gets asked about it?

I quite often get (normally during "small talk" rather that a direct question) - Do you have family? when speaking to clients....

I am neither naive enough to think they are always "just being friendly"
nor cynical enough to think they always have any ulterior motive.

I am surprized that others (male or female) have never had the subject raised.

Do you ask the gas engineer if he/she has children whilst working out a quote to replace your boiler?

It usually comes during the small talk phase, after the techie bit is over. As a Brit living in Germany they're naturally interested in why I'm here and family talk comes into it along the way.
Brexit is having a wee in the middle of the room at a house party because nobody is talking to you, and then complaining about the smell.

If I come face to face with anyother human being I always attempt to interact on a human level - so yes its fairly likely that if I would talk to a gas engineer (or anyone else) about things that were not directly related to the specific task at hand which might include but not be restricted to thier/my life and family.

If a Fireman were in the middle of attempting to rescue someone it is unlikely that I would engage in such an "off topic" conversation but in general everyday interactions it is far from uncommon for civilized humans to speak to each other - some might call it politeness. Maybe you should try it - possibly the Gas Engineer might respond by not ripping you off!!

Which is important to know if they're planning on taking you to one fo those parties where they put on leather trousers and slap each other.
