Yep, still got a load of his old postings somewhere archived. I liked his one about barcodes being the number of the beast, brilliant.

You failed. Brad Pit will be along shortly to give you a kicking.
But you're right. OwlHoot is talking out of his beak. Usenet is dead these days, nothing worth talking about. Anyone tempted to look into Usenet, don't waste your time. Check out torrents instead if you must be a lawbreaker.
I recommend paying to download your stuff.
Trust me. I'm only looking out for your best interests.

Does anybody else remember Robert E. McElwaine, University of Wisconsin Eau-Claire?

Yes, it's still going strong. Best place to download ebooks (alt.binaries.e-book.technical for example) and DVD images etc. I use the Giganews platinum service for binaries.
For text, Google groups seem to have checked the spammers for now, touch wood, although the sci.* groups are still beset by loonies and the occasional spammer.
The advantage of usenet over, say, Bit Torrent is that clued-up posters download PAR files along with their multipart posts. That means you can usually remedy incomplete or corrupt sets.
