I've been reading this post with interest. To be honest I'm disgusted with many of the views expressed on this post. I think comments about our Europeon neighbours that use references taken from the second world war are blatantly out of place and out of touch with the modern world view and only serves to shows the zenophobic culture of this small minded island nation.

As for the pound, I have no thoughts or sentamental attachment. It's not even of British origin anyway but was an imported from Europe.

It doesn't, but I would like to dissociate myself from this "his hosts" stuff. AtW is one of us now - an eccentric one to be sure but there has always been room for that - he has put a lot of effort into being British, and I will take him therefore at his word, and not see him as a guest and you or me as his hosts.

why is it when someone cannot make a good case for the UK to join the Euro they are left with nothing else to do but accuse the antis as being "parochial".? If joining the Euro is no more than a question of whether one is "parochial" or a "cool European" then give me little England any day.

The UK is no more up "tulip street" than any other European economy, the difference being that we can set our own solutions (right or wrong) as we like, when we like. We dont have to wait for Germany or France to make their minds up, or hope that what they want to do is the same as what we want to do.

Correct!! Our problem is that our HMG etc are just too plain stupid and wasteful. If we had invested some of our proceeds of growth instead of throwing it down a black hole, we could be in the position of Australia that has just returned 22 Billion dollars that it had put away for a rainy day, to its poorest constituents!!!!

Yesterday I drove across the Swiss border in my car and for the first time there was no border guard at all. This is because Switzerland have signed up to Schengen, simply to allow Swiss people to work just over the border. Next year there will be no passport control. Border guards may check cars for smuggled goods, but this is no different to what goes on between other EU countries. As Scotchpie says the world is changing.

Nah mate, they are nobodies claiming to represent everybody - that's why I called them Soviet because this was the typical Soviet trick (I think nazies used that too), including this "get out of my country" of you have some view that does not suit their own mindset.

I don't tell people who want to keep pound to get out of this country, frankly I like pounds and would be awesome if whole of europe switched to pounds, but that ain't gonna happen ever and UK is very isolated on the issue - maybe the collapse of pound will actually help reach agreement with the euro zone, sadly UK Govt's attitude is such that I am not sure France and Germany would want UK to be in eurozone anymore.
