Francko, I have been to Edinburgh (but not for Hogmanay, as I didn't want to be with 10,000 other Kiwis, as you pointed out) and yes it is nice - but I was expecting Glasgow to be the opposite, to be all working class and Glaswegian kiss and sectarianism and grim and dirty. But no, it has got a very interesting history and the wealth that it had in victorian times gives the city a nice feel, even if I am sure the suburbs are dire.
But hey - Traisnpotting was set in Edingurgh, so maybe the differences between the 2 cities are not as straightforward as the middle class Edinburgh vs working class Glasgow cliche would tend to indicate.

LG you're right, I didn't go there for the shopping, so I can't complain really. But as always when I am visiting a place, I was in a "mmmmh... could I live here?" frame of mind.

Not much better in summer. Wet and windy.

I did a contract up there several years ago. Nice people. I even ventured to pubs over the river once or twice.

Has the Anderson Centre been knocked down yet? As I was staying in the Hilton and the Marriot, I often walked past the ladies of the night on my way downtown.

How about Edinbra? Some say is very nice (well at least it's full of australians-new zealanders at new year, right?). There must be a reason why Shaunboy is in Glasgow, isn't it?

As you live in London, it would seem a little silly to visit Glasgow just for the shopping, but yes you did miss some of the nicer shops. There are one or two nice little arcades which are not obvious.

My wife was having a real moody one with the shopping untill she saw somebody come out of a doorway with lots of carrier bags from shops she hadnt seen. I should have done a runner, but we went to investigate Doh!.

No I didn't find many small arcade shops, truth is I had to visit the shopping areas in a bit of a hurry so I didn't find that the nice shops if there are any, are easy to find. But good if there are some, I'll have to go back.

I am quite into victorian architecture and I was very pleasantly surprised up there.

The only thing was the shopping is not fantastic (unless you're into pound stretcher kind shops)

I take it you didnt find the fashionable boutiques lurking in the arcades just behind the main facades then?

I went there over the weekend and I was quite impressed. Quite a nice place. Architecturally very interesting; nice accent; lively but not aggressive drunkenness on Sauchiehall and surrounding streets; not far from Loch Lomond etc. The only thing was the shopping is not fantastic (unless you're into pound stretcher kind shops), and also it was quite cold and obviously damp which to me seem to indicate they don't get much of a summer up there. But otherwise: top marks.
