Try Ireland: neutral, no problem. Respectable number of volunteers, even if it meant serving in the British Army (which can't have been many Irishmen's favourite organisation).

Or, Ireland with the Allies. Invaded pronto, Ireland couldn't have defended their Western coast, and neither could Britain. Then we have an occupied country on our back doorstep.

To be British is to hate all things foreign, but retire abroad.

Look no further than this site...

Top topics discussed or viewed on the first few pages of the CUK General forum:

A word game, embodying spontaneity and quirkiness.
    Music.
A detailed commentary on the weather.
    2 threads about cars.
    A random storytelling thread.
One all about shopping, and the relative merits of M&S and Waitrose.
    Social ineptitude.
    Work and laziness.
A thread about the popularity of a celebrity, who talks about cars. A lot.
    Bank Holiday weekends.
    House prices.
    Tax.
    Socialism.
    Bootlegged music.
    Getting a bargain.
    Governmental ineptitude.

Immigration's not up there at the moment, but it's only a mater of time.

Ahhh but we were talking about 'countries' not individuals

So Swiss or South America? don't be coy - we celebrate diversity in this country

We could commemorate being British with a new tax, £250 a year for being a working citizen, £150 if you are a pensioner?

I think the theme of the opening ceremony in 2012 should be "we did all this...and we invented all this - so you can all can get stuffed".

    I think it's a winner - shall I tell Lord Seb?

    Here's a funny one:

The August Bank Holiday has been suggested as a possible "Britishness" day by the Home Office minister
That would be the one that is not a Bank Holiday in Scotland? Something the whole of Britain could rally round, then.

Today, I got my sons British Citizenship - he wasn't born in the UK.

    I couldn't care less about the queen/royalty/morris dancing/etc.

And I hope my son as an 'immigrant' will make a useful contribution.
