Wait a mo - didnt SuperTramp use Churchills '..we will fight them on the beaches' ( a splendid speech methinks) on the 'Even in the quitest Moments ' album ; but no I cant see them using the Mariner - have to pass on this one - on reflection cant be Supertramp as they cant be classified as a heavy band.

As for mine, you are right on Coleredge and the band that came up with this song based on it have been around a few years now as well. Very big back in the early to mid 80's. They also have a very distinctive mascot.
Milk and Cookies been keeping you awake Dave ?

Right again - good old Donovan was hanging out with the Fab4 at that point.

Still dont know about which band would have been pretentious enough to ust the Ancient Mariner lyrics , my first impression was Yes - but I think thats too much for that lot and sadly I know just about every little thing theyve done.

So I shall leave that one to some other Afficiando.

Oh as for the clue - Mellow Yellow - you know

    Electric Bannana
Is sure to be the very next phase

    So watch out !

    Well done Dave !!

    It is indeed Genesis.

The first song is the opening song of selling England by the Pound - its called
    Dancing with the Moonlit Knight

Can you tell me where my country lies?"
said the unifaun to his true love's eyes.
"It lies with me!" cried the Queen of Maybe
    - for her merchandise, he traded in his prize.

"Paper late!" cried a voice in the crowd.
"Old man dies!" The note he left was signed 'Old Father Thames'
    - it seems he's drowned;
    selling england by the pound.

    Citizens of Hope & Glory,
Time goes by - it's the 'time of your life'.
    Easy now, sit you down.
    Chewing through your Wimpey dreams,
    they eat without a sound;
    digesting england by the pound.

Young man says 'you are what you eat' - eat well.
Old man says 'you are what you wear' - wear well.
    You know what you are, you don't give a damn;
bursting your belt that is your homemade sham.

The Captain leads his dance right on through the night
    - join the dance ....
Follow on! Till the Grail sun sets in the mould.
Follow on! Till the gold is cold.
Dancing out with the moonlit knight,
Knights of the Green Shield stamp and shout.

    There's a fat old lady outside the saloon;
laying out the credit she plays Fortune.
    The deck is uneven right from the start;
all of their hands are playing apart.

The Captain leads his dance right on through the night
    - join the dance ....
Follow on! A Round Table-talking down we go.
    You're the show!

Off we go with: - You play the hobbyhorse,
    I'll play the fool.
    We'll tease the bull
ringing round & loud, loud & round.
Follow on! With a twist of the world we go.
Follow on! Till the gold is cold.
Dancing out with the moonlit knight,
Knights of the Green Shield stamp and shout

Now then - the same band wrote this imortal lyric which was a hit single in 1970

    Stay with me,
My love I hope youll always be
Right here by my side if ever I need you
    Oh my love

    In your arms,
I feel so safe and so secure
Everyday is such a perfect day to spend
    Alone with you

    I will follow you

    will you follow me

All the days and nights that we know will be

I will stay with you will you stay with me
Just one single tear in each passing year

    Ah wasnt that nice ?

Finally no marks for knowing the band who wrote and sang

We all live in a Yellow Submarine

But which famous Scots Guitatist/Lyricist helped to structure the song and speaks on one of the silly voices you can hear on the record ??

    Another in a nautical Vein

Hear the rime of the ancient mariner
See his eye as he stops one of three
Mesmerises one of the wedding guests
Stay here and listen to the nightmares of the sea.

    Easy one really....

Talk about things you'd like to do
You've got to have a dream
If you don't have a dream
How you gonna have a dream come true

Talk about the moon floating in the sky
Looking like a lily on a lake
Talk about the bird learning how to fly
Making all the music he can make

    Happy talkin' talkin Happy talk
Talk about things you'd like to do
You've got to have a dream
If you don't have a dream

Peeking through the branches of a tree
Talk about the girl talk about the boy
Counting all the ripples on the sea

    Happy talkin' talkin Happy talk
Talk about things you'd like to do

Talk about the boy saying to the girl
Golly baby I'm a lucky cus
Talk about the girl saying to the boy
You and me are lucky to be us

    Happy talkin' talkin Happy talk
Talk about things you'd like to do
You've got to have a dream
If you don't have a dream
How you gonna make a dream come true
And if you don't talk happy
And you never have a dream
Then you'll never have a dream come true

it's from early80's iirc. artist released album and during promotion repeatedly voiced his support for ronald reagan's policies. he's always veered from one thing to another. a recent release was all for impeaching the president. damn - i've said too much.
