If your hosts are up for it, get them to take you to Greensleeves for some medieval fun - it really is a blast..

I wonder if Carnivore serves Troll meat?
Cheers lads, so its downtown Soweto blinged up like a rapper and kitted with American style camera collection. I feel as popular as the love child of Chico & Andyw.
For the rest thanks for the sensible suggestions, I'm being driven round by the locals mostly so should avoid the traffic light issues. Had the Butchers block recommended, I'll try Carnivore if my expense account will stretch (permie lifestyle sorry to say, I reckon they would try and argue about McDonalds.)

What is it with you "Seth Effrikens", can't you remember long words?Originally posted by skelm View PostIndeed I do recommend the above restaurant. Its taken from the original Canivore in Kenya ( I was born in Kenya ) which serves game meat.
JHB has always felt dodgy for me, always wary .... never felt uneasy in CPT however. I know ppl say it has a higher murder rate than Joburg but thats media. I go to CPT twice a year and stay with friends who dont live in especially affluent areas but their cars are never locked and neither is the house.
Try that in Joburg!

Hillbrow is an ideal location for an evening stroll, to take in the sights and meet new people.
Be sure to take a good camera and wear your Sunday best. In fact, as so much of the indigenous culture revolves around status and wealth, carry as much 'bling' and as many gadgets as you can. Show them off to people, and you will command more respect.*
* Do not follow this advice.

I'd rather not. My mate's wife is from Joburg - her family moved to Cape Town after they were broken into by guys with big guns. Fortunately they had some sort of panic room in their bedroom so they were unharmed. House was trashed though.Originally posted by skelm View Post

I'll second Carnivore, but if you can't make it there and like meat, The Butcher's Block restaurant is always excellent (IIRC there is one in Sandton Square attached to the shopping centre)..Originally posted by LegendsWear7 View PostGet a good feed at

Always a minimum of 15 different types of meat - and a minimum of 5 game meats.
Choice of meat includes - crocodile, zebra, giraffe, impala, ostrich, etc.
Aviyal (Herbivore) - Spicy mixed vegetables cooked in a coconut sauce and served with rice
Vegetable Lasagne (Herbivore) - Chopped vegetables served between layers of pasta and covered in cheese.
Kumbi Baji (Herbivore) - Mushrooms and peas cooked in a spiced yogurt and cream sauce, served with rice

I was there recently. Dodgy as. Felt uncomfortable in the downtown. The place I stayed at in Kensington suffered an armed robbery 10 days prior to my visit and all the guests valuables were taken from the security box. Nigerians they said.
Cape Town now has a higher murder rate than Jozi.
The Apartheid Museum is outstanding.
A trip to Soweto is doable.
Many affluent folk tend to stay in secure shopping centres.
You have to read the local papers. At once hilarious and terrifying.

Actually if you go on an organised tour you are quite correct. Excellent food, beer and entertainment to be had.Originally posted by ~Craig~ View PostI hear that Soweto is quite nice for a visit in the evenings......

1) Because the shanty towns are closer to city centre. Its not as spread out as CPT??Originally posted by beaker View PostWhy is Joburg so dangerous anyway?
2) Alot of money flying around and flashy cars, houses so the common man is attracted to rob. High unemployment amongst locals.
