Medieval monks, I think. The question mark is a shortened form of "Questio" ("I question"), and the explamation mark is short for "Io" ("I rejoice").

Shakespeare didn’t even come up with any new letters. All he had were the exclamation and question marks, of which he made liberal use. He was more into creating whole sentences than letters though, with ambiguity his tool rather than explicitly stating emotions. Someone did some great work inventing the exclamation mark at some point in history but sadly no one followed up on this sterling work until recentlyOriginally posted by BrilloPad View Posthe might have created a few.

How spiteful children can be.Originally posted by Board Game Geek View PostSomeone who became a household name in the 80's after That's Life with Esther Rantzen ran a piece about him.
He entered the zeitgeist of the time as a synonym for someone who was mentally and physically impaired.
Thus, across the school playing grounds in the land, the term "spastic" or "spazz" was replaced with "joey".
A somewhat sad thing to be remembered for I guess.
Errrrr JOEEEEEY.

Maybe I can't do anything about it but that doesn't mean I should like it, there has been a massive change in English over a short period of time. It doesn't sound nice, it doesn't look nice, it does however identify morons to potential employers, which is something to be greatful for.
I'm not the worlds best at written English, having had a 1970s progressive education, but I feel embarrassed by my shortcomings not proud of them.
Would you want a child of yours growing up sounding like a cross between Ali G and Joey Deacon?
End of Rant
Grateful

Because I find the patronising sentiment annoying. Much the same as I find "No, Next" annoying.Originally posted by Bagpuss View PostThen why did you vote that WHS was annoying?
Writing "I agree" without giving a reason or adding to the debate isn't much better than WHS either.
If the OP had wanted to poll opinion, they would have done a poll. WHS doesn't add anything.

Now you aren't making sense.Originally posted by Bagpuss View PostSorry you have lost me. Are you saying you try to improve your literacy?
I suppose it's not needed if most posts are cut and paste?
I'm not sure how syntax would help improve political or economic or any other knowledge?
Sorry I don't know Robert Fisk.
Wo is the comprehensive education.
Robert Fisk writes for the newspaper you mostly quote from.
