Surely LB, you're and expert in evil, general wickedness and mischief, are you not?

    However, I'm with you.

I don't consider myself a bona fide 'expert' in any particular field.

I'm am quite knowledgeable and competent in quite a few areas but an 'expert' suggests a far deeper understanding and level of authority.

For example, most senior lawyers are knowledgeable and competent (one hopes) but very few of them are actually acknowledged 'experts' at law.

The status of 'expert' can only truly be conferred by ones professional peers, or some competent authority (as in an 'expert witness' in legal cases).

Therein lies the neat little conundrum. As you have no way of knowing whether the frame of reference is shared, there is no correct answer (absolutely speaking).

It's that sort of thing that drove Chico to disappear up his own virtual login.

No, the problem here is not with the word expert, but with the concept of a subject.
Take plumbing for example, a plumber can be an expert at soldering the joints, but an academic might be an expert at the theory of soldering joints. A third person might be an expert at teaching others how to solder joints. There might be a whole new method of doing joints that has not been invented yet, but when it is there will be a whole new set of experts.
