Sounds like a brave and decisive bloke. Despite his back being somewhat protected by the rucksack, I'd guess it could easily have blown off the back of his head or knackered his legs.

Usually it's the shrapnel that's the killer. But that close, in actual contact, just the shock wave can damage tissue and bones.

I suspect just putting a combat helmet squarely over a grenade would dampen much of the force and minimize the shrapnel, although the helmet itself would probably go shooting a couple of hundred yards up in the air.

Trouble is, you obviously don't get more than a second or two at most to position it, and really wouldn't want your hands or yourself anywhere near the thing when it goes off.

I remember when I was a lad being told a story of a sailor who saved his colleagues and ship by picking up a red-hot cannon (or cannon ball, my memory's not that good!) with his bare hands and throwing it overboard before the ship set on fire. I remember the sense of how awestruck I was hearing that and wonder if it was real or just a story.

These guys are certainly a lot braver than me.
