The trick of driving on the Autostrada is that the speed limit is actually the minimum. Once you've understood that, it's a breeze.
I hate driving in Italy.

He must have stopped at autogrills or similar places (these are chains of restaurants on the motorways). However, I'd rather eat out in those places than in many other restaurants around the world.Originally posted by roadster198 View PostYou sure you were in Italy matey

I'd agree about the drivers. Driving rules for Italians seem to be a form of advice than actual law. Driving on your bumper, double\triple parking and senselessly beeping the horn all wind me up no end.Originally posted by EternalOptimist View PostI wouldn't go back to Italy, bad roads, bad drivers, awful food, rip-off prices -
Prices and quality of food vary greatly in my experience, particularly in touristy places.

Well, its subjective isn't it. Just my opinion.Originally posted by Francko View PostAgreed on roads and drivers and, since a few years ago, prices too. However, I thought food was still very good. Sure you are a competent judge?
If you were travelling fast through Italy, where would you eat Francko ?

I didn't visit Caserta, sorry, too much to do. But I did see volcanic activity on the mountain next to Vesuvius, to the North, three or four plumes of heavy smoke coming out of the mountainside, quite low down. Very spectacularOriginally posted by Marina View PostI still don't understand why they don't just chuck all that rubbish down mount Vesuvius. It probably won't erupt for centuries, and by that time the rubbish will all have burnt to a crisp and there'll be hordes of robots to clean up the mess in an hour or two.
BTW did you visit Caserta as someone recommended?

Funny how the guide in Pompeii kept explaining how the inhabitants 2000 years ago kept the place very clean

How old is your son?Originally posted by EternalOptimist View PostGot back a few days ago, from a long drive down to Naples in Italy and back. My main worry was that I would put the wrong fuel into my car but in the event it was not a problem. Most Italian service stations have attendants who fill up for you, and they explained all the different pumps.
I went about £900 over my budget due to the toll roads in France and Italy, plus the high cost of fuel on the motorways. The hotels were very cheap, I didnt have to pay more than £50 for a decent room. Herculaneum and Pompeii were well worth the visit and I had six days close contact with my son, eyeball to eyeball.
Thats what I did it for really, a bit of male bonding.

Pompeii was interesting, and a ferry trip to Capri was pleasant... wouldn't recommend it unless you're passing though... quickly.
Go down the coast to Amalfi. Very very nice.
