Can't remeber where it was, but I was driving down a road where they had the word slow pained on it. Then a bit further on they had the word slower. How did they know I'd ignored the first one?

Well I'll decide wether its polite or not once I've read it if you don't mind.

It dates back to when you would see signs such as "Police Notice - No Parking". The idea was to make folks think it was an official notice, and you'd get fined for disobeying it.
