<sigh> ok, well if we ARE going to be nice and offer advice here's my 2 pounds worth..

-never ever trust what an agent says unless proven (sorry DA but it's true)

-join PCG, its a few notes but well worth it for the info, templates, discounts and a slightly more serious version of CUK

-save hard for the first year minimum, dont go spending everything now the money is rolling in, there are good and bad times..

-dont get involved in the permie time wasting of gossip "he did this, she did that", "i want a pay rise", your a contractor and easily dispensible and so should get your head down, do your work, ignore all permie scum whenever, and post on here whenever is possible

-if/when you buy your first flash car, dont park it next to your project manager in the car park

Enjoy the situation while you can - the market is not always so bouyant.... and if it happens play one offer off against the other to get the agency to reduce their margin.

Lee - congrats on getting into contracting so early. I often wonder how great it would have been if I went contracting at a younger age.

£200 is pretty good for your first gig and especially at your age/experience level. No doubt the agency is creaming off a lot above this but let them have their fun for the 6 months - after that you can negotiate.

You sound like you've got a good head on you, but do get a Contracting specialist accountant - it'll help loads.

Also, I would advise you to watch your personal finances. It's easy to go wild on a good income but try to save and plan - remember, you're not going to have a pension or paid for holidays/sickness. You might also be out of contract for several months in a year. Personally I try to save/invest 80% of my income - but work out a number you're comfortable with.

But at your age - enjoy yourself a bit too eh. And show us your bird's norks.

Should I tell them that I am happy with the original 3 month contract or snap up the 6 months if I am offered?

You will find sometimes you will arrive on a project when they are scheduled to need you, but they a 3 months behind. There is only a small amount of work to do every day this board will take care of the rest of the time.

Contract length: I look at the end date of the contract and think if it would be a good time to find a new contract if necessary. Contract ending around holidays, Xmas, Easter etc. may leave you on the bench for a few weeks, good if that’s what you want. But weeks may turn into months, confidence goes and you may end-up on here posting should I take the permie job I have been offered.

I also started as a contractor at 23 (24 now). I may feel the need to start a sub 25 contractors group. You know so us kids dont have to be bothered with the hip replacement discussions.
