A few years ago, when I was a permie we played a great joke on a mate in one of our US offices by sending him a 'you have been randomly selected for testing' email from an address very like the official dope testers. We had him really worried for a while as he'd just got back from a week in Amsterdam

Happened 2 years ago at current gig - someone got a sample bottle from Doctor and sent via internal post to a grad intern. Manager also in on the joke - just as well as the grad asked the manager. Manager said we all had to give a sample to receptionist.

The receptionist was not pleased!

Sometimes thet take hair samples. So shave your head beforehand. If asked just say it was for charity.

As a contractor, I'd take the view that this doesn't apply to me - unless they test the guy that fixes the photocopier, the girl that polishes the plants, the plumber etc.
Alcohol tests - I'd never work again

Not on contract but permy a couple of years ago I was, does the place you need to give one happen to be a bank, might be same place, people think its common but its not that common IMO in UK, US different story.

Now I'm going up in the rankins for my little cyclin hobby I'm having to pee in bottles and give blood samples. Really not my idea of fun.

Read up on the testing procedures and they are really dumb as well.

You might want to avoid bread with poppy seeds for a day or two before, as some claim that the metabolites can be picked up in the opiates section of a test

I had to give a urine same in the loo on my own no one watching (hint, hint, if you think failing it might be a problem). They then stuck the p*ss in 3 platic cups and stuck a kind of pregnancy test thing in it, first tested for cocaine, speed etc, second optiates, third cannabis - THC, cannbloids . I then had to sit there for 15mins watching my tests to see the results so I knew there and then the result. I passed everything, was only worried about one thing though which is hard to get out of system but made sure I wasnt near anyone smoking a spliff for about 5 weeks. If it worries you that much you can buy home testing kits for a couple of quid, the ones I bought online were the same as the ones used, ie they tested urine.

I did ask what would happen if said no to taking the test as I felt it was an intrusion and they said if I said no they would report it to HR and then it was upto HR to determine what to do.

They just swab the inside of your mouth with a giant cotton bud thingy.
