My former employer used to insist that an appraisal was not the forum for discussion of salary matters. Discussion of salary matters was for "pay reviews", which always seemed to get delayed for years at a time.

I used to love appraisals, perfect time to ask for a payrise. Print of some market figures and bingo, another 3.25p an hour
