    Answered my own question

ippr is a charity. We are funded by a mixture of corporate, charitable, trade union, trade body and individual donations.

Funders either provide donations to help individual research projects or join our partnership programme helping to fund our events, media and publishing activities as well as our day-to-day operations. ippr is distinct from ippr Trading, which does consultancy work and does not have charitable status.

We are grateful for the support we have received from our funders who have made possible a great deal of important policy work and helped advance our core values.

Ahh but that's how the Government works - think tanks to float policy... if the public don't make a hue & cry about it then it's safe to adopt... if the outrage is too much then "nothing to do with us"

btw where do they get their funding from?

    independence
Our agenda is simple: we want to build a fairer, more democratic and environmentally sustainable world. We are driven by these values, not by any party or interest group.

It is urging Home Secretary Jacqui Smith to adopt the move, saying a large scale deportation would never happen.

The Home Office said an amnesty was unnecessary and would create "a strong pull for waves of illegal migration".

It is not known how many illegal immigrants are in the UK, with estimates varying widely from 300,000 to 900,000.

We would notice it straightaway in uncleaned offices, dirty streets and unstaffed pubs and clubs

The Home Office has estimated it would take more than 30 years to deport them all.

Danny Sriskandandarajah, head of migration and equalities at the Institute of Public Policy Research, said: "The simple truth is that we are not going to deport hundreds of thousands of people from the UK.

"Our economy would shrink and we would notice it straightaway in uncleaned offices, dirty streets and unstaffed pubs and clubs.
    feck off.

    what a joke.

Deported Iranian back in the UK
Shahin Portofeh has now been granted leave to remain in the UK
An asylum seeker who sewed up his eyes and lips in protest at the prospect of being deported from Coventry back to Iran has returned to the UK.
Shahin Portofeh, who had been involved in a gay relationship, warned that he faced execution if he was sent home.

He was eventually deported to Tehran in 2004 where he says he was lashed and jailed, before escaping from custody.

Mr Portofeh, 27, is now back in Coventry and has been granted leave to remain in the UK by the Home Office.

He is probably a f'n illegal and all! When I was at the home Office - doing IT, not catching them - some of the cleaners were known illegals. We even caught some Nigerian 'contractors' as illegal entrants. As long as the liberal do-gooders carry on creating these quangos that speak for a tiny minority and claim to have some authority, there is no hope.
I'll be off to Belgian Congo then.

How did they come up with this ridiculous figure I wonder? Most illegal migrants are not going to be highly skilled sorts, they can come here legally. It is highly unlikely that their net contribution would even be positive.

It is missing the point to talk about costs of removal. It may well not be worthwhile trying to round them all up but at least in the absence of an official amnesty we do not have to be stuck with those that turn out to be criminals or spongers.
