Have you tried reading the Sven Hassel war books recently? Can't go wrong with those.

Most of the Bill Bryson travel stuff is quite funny, as is anything by PJ O'Rourke IMHO.

Funniest Series EVER!: Spike Milligan War Memoirs
• "The War (and Peace) Memoirs"
o The seven memoirs were also recorded as talking books with Spike reciting them in his own inimitable style.
o Adolf Hitler: My Part in his Downfall (1971)
o Rommel? Gunner Who? A Confrontation in the Desert (1974)
o Monty: His Part in My Victory (1976)
This and the previous two books were released and publicised as the first, second, and third part respectively of a trilogy.
o Mussolini: His Part in My Downfall (1978)
This was announced as the fourth part of his trilogy.
o Where Have All the Bullets Gone? (1985)
o Goodbye Soldier (1986)
o Peace Work (1992)
It’s a bit hard to get hold of them but they are worth every penny, a must in my humble opinion!

Guards Guards is my favorite.
Nearly as good as Tolkeins Lord of the rings which I have read 11 times to date.

Any book recommendations for my next hit of poltroonery & scandalous behaviour?
I’ve just started “The Dice Man”. The Mark Gatiss ‘Lucifer Box’ novels may also be on the shortlist.
If you like George Macdonald Fraser's stuff, try his army "memoirs", such as "The General Danced at Dawn" & McAuslan in the Rough
