We've had it so free and easy for the past 60 years that many people today don't realise what a real fascist state is. Ask an old german jew, or a zimbabwean, or anyone from the old soviet empire. If you still hold the USA up alongside that lot then yes, you do need to explain.

it is a Democracy based on the freedom of the individual.
a fascist state is based on the freedom of the governing body to usurp the rights of the individual and compell them to comply with the needs and/or requirements of the state.
