Of course if I was managing the project that would NOT have happened. but the point of contractors is they shouldn't need the client to manage them.

Actually, is it a more common situation where you work hard for a year and leave not knowing if what you have done would ever be used because nobody ever found the time to write a spec. or even check your stuff , even briefly, to give you any feedback?
